Fluctuating environment may have driven human evolution

Dec. 24, 2012 ? A series of rapid environmental changes in East Africa roughly 2 million years ago may be responsible for driving human evolution, according to researchers at Penn State and Rutgers University.

"The landscape early humans were inhabiting transitioned rapidly back and forth between a closed woodland and an open grassland about five to six times during a period of 200,000 years," said Clayton Magill, graduate student in geosciences at Penn State. "These changes happened very abruptly, with each transition occurring over hundreds to just a few thousand years."

According to Katherine Freeman, professor of geosciences, Penn State, the current leading hypothesis suggests that evolutionary changes among humans during the period the team investigated were related to a long, steady environmental change or even one big change in climate.

"There is a view this time in Africa was the 'Great Drying,' when the environment slowly dried out over 3 million years," she said. "But our data show that it was not a grand progression towards dry; the environment was highly variable."

According to Magill, many anthropologists believe that variability of experience can trigger cognitive development.

"Early humans went from having trees available to having only grasses available in just 10 to 100 generations, and their diets would have had to change in response," he said. "Changes in food availability, food type, or the way you get food can trigger evolutionary mechanisms to deal with those changes. The result can be increased brain size and cognition, changes in locomotion and even social changes -- how you interact with others in a group. Our data are consistent with these hypotheses. We show that the environment changed dramatically over a short time, and this variability coincides with an important period in our human evolution when the genus Homo was first established and when there was first evidence of tool use."

The researchers -- including Gail Ashley, professor of earth and planetary sciences, Rutgers University -- examined lake sediments from Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanzania. They removed the organic matter that had either washed or was blown into the lake from the surrounding vegetation, microbes and other organisms 2 million years ago from the sediments. In particular, they looked at biomarkers -- fossil molecules from ancient organisms -- from the waxy coating on plant leaves.

"We looked at leaf waxes because they're tough, they survive well in the sediment," said Freeman.

The team used gas chromatography and mass spectrometry to determine the relative abundances of different leaf waxes and the abundance of carbon isotopes for different leaf waxes. The data enabled them to reconstruct the types of vegetation present in the Olduvai Gorge area at very specific time intervals.

The results showed that the environment transitioned rapidly back and forth between a closed woodland and an open grassland.

To find out what caused this rapid transitioning, the researchers used statistical and mathematical models to correlate the changes they saw in the environment with other things that may have been happening at the time, including changes in the Earth's movement and changes in sea-surface temperatures.

"The orbit of the Earth around the sun slowly changes with time," said Freeman. "These changes were tied to the local climate at Olduvai Gorge through changes in the monsoon system in Africa. Slight changes in the amount of sunshine changed the intensity of atmospheric circulation and the supply of water. The rain patterns that drive the plant patterns follow this monsoon circulation. We found a correlation between changes in the environment and planetary movement."

The team also found a correlation between changes in the environment and sea-surface temperature in the tropics.

"We find complementary forcing mechanisms: one is the way Earth orbits, and the other is variation in ocean temperatures surrounding Africa," Freeman said. The researchers recently published their results in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences along with another paper in the same issue that builds on these findings. The second paper shows that rainfall was greater when there were trees around and less when there was a grassland.

"The research points to the importance of water in an arid landscape like Africa," said Magill. "The plants are so intimately tied to the water that if you have water shortages, they usually lead to food insecurity.

"Together, these two papers shine light on human evolution because we now have an adaptive perspective. We understand, at least to a first approximation, what kinds of conditions were prevalent in that area and we show that changes in food and water were linked to major evolutionary changes."

The National Science Foundation funded this research.

Making Process Planning Cool Again - Sarah Green - Our Editors ...

Processes are, if not under attack, then falling out of fashion among a certain type of business cognoscenti. Planning is out. "Planning to learn" is in. Little bets, experimentation, just start, iteration, rapid prototyping, lean ? these are the cool kids. Process is the dork in the corner wearing mom-jeans and an unironic Christmas sweater.

But while it may not be cool to talk about process, I suspect I don't have to convince HBR readers of its merits ? how else to explain a post on a project management process racking up hundreds of comments? Still, the world is in need of more processes ? and more process evangelists.

Steve St. Angelo is the Chief Quality Officer for Toyota North America. I caught up with him recently, and with Zack Rosenberg, co-founder and CEO of the St. Bernard Project, a non-profit building homes in post-Katrina New Orleans (yes, seven years later, they are still rebuilding down there). Rosenberg's organization has been using Toyota's process chops to produce more houses, more efficiently. St. Angelo is as straightforward and steady as your best factory foreman; Rosenberg is a spinning top of enthusiasm. Together, they're putting roofs over people's heads.

Here's how it works. Through the Toyota Production System Support Center (TSSC), a nonprofit within the auto company, Toyota shares its TPS methods with all kinds of organizations ? including donating their expertise to other nonprofits. "So what?" you might say, "TPS is old news." And Toyota has had recall and quality issues recently. And many of the companies that implemented the TPS principles have found them difficult ? at best ? to implement. So what makes this different?

First, TSSC is choosey. They don't start working with an organization if the executive team is skittish ? at all ? about adopting TPS methods wholeheartedly. Like any good process junkies, they know a half-adopted process is as bad, if not worse, than none at all. Second, they invest for the long term. It's not just about changing the process ? it's about changing the culture. Too many processes are implemented superficially, which is why they don't work. "This is not a silver bullet," as St. Angelo cautioned me. To make it work, you need to be "obsessed." And it's not without challenges ? Rosenberg talked about how when they first started implementing TPS, with its focus on surfacing problems quickly, the organizational culture became negative. The focus on "continuous improvement" left employees feeling like whatever they were accomplishing was never good enough. As soon as one problem was solved, one inefficiency identified, it was on to the next. So Rosenberg adapted ? he started talking more about "constructive dissatisfaction," and celebrating small wins.

Another TSSC principle: The companies and nonprofits working with TSSC aren't allowed to lay anyone off. Anyone. The theory: if workers realize their jobs are safe, they're much more likely to adopt more efficient processes. Too often in business-speak, "We need to get more efficient" translates to "We need to fire some of you." No wonder people cleave to inefficiency ? they want to defend their jobs. Take that fear away, and it's much easier to get stuff done.

They start with the biggest roadblocks, first. "We go in and ask them, 'What's your largest problem?'" he said, "And we start there." That's how TSSC helped the St. Bernard Project reduce the time it took to build a house by 50%. It's how they helped the Food Bank for New York City reduce the wait at one soup kitchen from 85 minutes to 18 minutes. And it's how they decreased ER waiting times ? and hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs ? at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

That's what I love about a good process: It builds homes. It feeds the hungry. It heals the sick.

But what does Toyota get out of this, aside from that feel-good factor, and some (ahem) fawning media coverage? St. Angelo says they use it as talent development for more junior employees. By teaching TPS to others, they learn it better themselves. They see where the pain points are; they learn how to manage people, build trust, get buy-in, iron out the wrinkles, adapt. And, for a generation who wants more meaningful work, it's not a bad retention strategy.

Finally, as my conversation with St. Angelo was winding down, I just had to ask the question I've been secretly burning to ask this entire time: How the heck do you deal with airport security lines? As one process junkie to another ? don't they just make you unbelievably frustrated?

St. Angelo stops, looks at me. Pauses. Thinks. Then immediately starts brainstorming how he might rejigger the screening system, revamp the queuing process, and manage the flow of grey plastic bins that receive our shoes, watches, computers, and baggies full of 3-oz liquids. This guy is good.

But a good process ? that's even better.

Eric Chua : Life, Business and Real Estate in Singapore ? Choose ...

It is important to take the time to learn how to properly utilize internet promotion. Read this article to learn more about internet marketing and get started with your online business.

Always stay on top of what your internet promotion competition is doing. There is competition in Website marketing, no matter how tiny you think your niche is.

You must take your website marketing seriously and devote time to research in order to succeed. Pick a mentor that you trust and admire online. Savvy internet marketers often offer free consultations or promotional service bundles to customers. You should thoroughly research your endeavor before deciding it is something you will stick with over the long haul. Keep in mind that this might take time to start, but know that it is well worth your time.

TIP! Make yourself an expert in any topic on your site. This is very important because it gives you a great deal of credibility and makes a strong impression on your potential customers.

Personalize whatever you put out to your email contacts. Your current and prospective customers probably are already annoyed at the bulk emails they receive. Consider this: don?t you dislike getting bulk mail from strangers? If you make your emails more personal, this should give you a leg up on your competition when sending emails.

Use social media, such as Twitter or Facebook in your Website marketing strategy. Social media sites will keep you and your target audience in constant contact, allowing you to send information quickly and easily. Just be wary of over-promoting. Be sure to layer in original and more conversational posts along with your more promotional style messages.

TIP! Always keep an eye on exactly what kind of content you are giving your customers when you use the internet to promote your business. Individualize your content, and make it relevant.

Review your business website from the perspective of a customer. Is your site user friendly? Does it offer enjoyment to the reader? Ordering products should be quick, easy and secure. Make sure that you maximize the quality and functionality of your site to keep your customers.

When you use email as a regular form of communication with your customers, make sure you change your links on a regular basis. If you information is redundant you will likely bore your customers instead of encouraging them to purchase products. Your email readers will be less likely to lose interest if you keep changing up the links in your emails.

Promote your business through other popular sites online. Making this investment will pay off in the form of valuable exposure for your company or brand. For the most bang for your buck, choose a page with plenty of traffic so that as many people as possible see your company name.

TIP! A time tested strategy to maintain an edge in business is to always look at what your competitors are doing. Check out other websites in your field to discover what they could improve upon.

Stay away from spamming at all costs. While it may seem efficient to post a bunch of comments on sites, those posts won?t have the positive effect you desire. If you try to use that method you are more likely to have people turn away from your business than to seek more information.

Create interactive features such as a chat area on your website for customers. People will identify with your brand if they can discuss things they enjoy with people who have similar interests. A forum gives you the opportunity to learn from your customers while allowing users to make important business contacts.

Be certain to make use of textual emphasis techniques as you plan your site?s layout. Augment the power of a term or phrase by changing it to italics, underlined, or bold text. Using emphasis on certain words will help you clarify what message you are wanting to get across to your customers.

TIP! Be sure to have customer reviews and testimonials included on your site. People enjoy reading what others have written about any product they are considering.

For any business website that sells products in any volume at all, third-party transaction security is vital. There are a lot of services that are considered ?trusted?. McAffee, VeriSign, etc. will safeguard the financial exposure of both vendor and customer. While these systems are not always very cheap, they are a critical component of safe and secure online transactions.

Closely evaluate the actions of your top competitors and analyze that data to formulate your own plans. Picture yourself as a customer on their site, and if you can see yourself wanting to buy, they are doing it right. Use the best ideas and fold it into your own strategy.

If you want to be seen as an authority in your field, compile a glossary of terms. This can help your customers figure out what they need to know, making them more likely to visit your site again. As a highly searchable page, a glossary is sure to drive significant new traffic to your site.

TIP! Your site may be marketed as some kind of social marketing or club instead of your business. This will keep customers coming back, rather than visiting once and leaving immediately.

Blogging can be an effective way to increase traffic to your website. Just remember that you need regular infusions of fresh content to make a blog effective. Visitors are more likely to revisit your site if they know they will always be reading up-to-date, useful information.

Try your hand at mobile marketing. This gives you a chance to give visitors to your site a way to get alerts via text about discounts or new products. This is a new method of advertising that also will boost your advertising campaigns in Web marketing.

The tag you choose for your site should clearly define you. Many people will either be enticed further or steered away by what they read in your website?s tag. Using language that isn?t natural and relevant can be the biggest mistake you make when creating this tag.

TIP! If you want to build trust and to sell products, you need to offer a warranty or some type of guarantee. Such policies will put your customers at ease and give you a respectable and trusted persona.

Sell your product using positive motivation. Talk about how much your readers can improve their lives by buying your product. Encouraging your audience to use your product to follow their dreams will make them much more likely to buy.

It is very helpful to have a 500 error page. This type of error page will be seen by customers if something goes wrong with your website. Genetic error messages just display a message that the connection timed out. Instead, inform your visitors that you are working on a fix to their problem using a more creative webpage message that fits the format of your site.

It would take extensive articles and books to explain every aspect of Online marketing, yet all successful businesses need to start somewhere. Even those who are experienced at Internet promotion are looking for new techniques.

TIP! Always have a budge and do not overspend on advertising. Not all forms of marketing online require an investment.

Christmas shopping: A pink kitchen set and the 'buying local' dilemma

I wasted hours looking for a cheaper version online, when my dad was willing to pay more at the local store. He made me realize that I was all about 'buying local' until I had to shell out more money. I've learned:?I can?t always pay more, but I don?t always have to pay less.

He was trying to buy a Christmas present for my three-year-old at a store in Decatur, Ill. where I grew up, but I had found a less expensive toy kitchen online. I shouldn?t have gotten involved, but in my constant pursuit of a better deal, and my inherent cheapness, I didn?t want him to pay too much. Now in addition to squashing his enthusiasm and Christmas spirit, I seemed to be stomping on my father?s moral code.

Every holiday season, he sends me a check to pick out gifts for my children, except last year. During our Thanksgiving visit to Illinois, Dad got such a kick out of watching his granddaughter pretend to cook he decided she needed her own mini range and refrigerator.

On his lunch hour from the firm where he has worked since the day he graduated from law school, Dad went to Haines & Essick. The small stationary and gift store has been a Decatur institution since 1902. Today, it is one of the few stores left downtown, which sadly has more parking spaces than places to shop.

Before we were even back home in Maine, Dad had e-mailed me a picture of a kitchen the store could ship just in time for Christmas. My 70-year-old father had never sent me anything online so his behavior was noteworthy. We do e-mail, but it?s a process that involves his secretary, Ginger, printing out my messages for him to read, and then my Dad dictaphones his response for Ginger to type up and e-mail back to me.

The kitchen in the picture was fabulous. It had a wooden oven and a microwave, plenty of refrigerator space for fake food and even a drink dispenser ? but the price tag quite literally took my breath away. For a moment, I thought if my father was willing to fork over $300 for a toy maybe I could talk him into remodeling my actual kitchen.

I spent the morning online pricing other toy kitchens, until I located a pink retro model from the same company for a third of the price.

My e-mail with the lower-priced model presented my Dad with a quandary: Mrs. Miller in the Haines & Essick?s toy department had spent a lot of time helping him select the kitchen set; it didn?t seem right for him to go buy it cheaper somewhere else.

By the time he got me on the phone, Dad had been to Haines & Essick four times and was having Ginger hold all his calls while he figured out how to fairly procure his granddaughter?s present. Mrs. Miller could order the pink kitchen I found online, but not at the same price. After discussing numerous scenarios, she conceded that my Dad should take the better deal online. During his third visit, Dad tried to pay Mrs. Miller some arbitrary finder?s fee, handing her a hundred dollar bill that she refused to take.

In the end, my father bought the pink kitchen from Haines & Essick even though it cost him more.

I?ve always thrown around the term ?buying local,? and thought I walked the walk: I frequent farm stands and independent bookstores. After college, during my self-righteous phase when I came back home and threw around all the new jargon I learned, I no doubt lectured my father on the importance of ?buying local? and eating ?locally-sourced food? ? things he had done all his life without affixing a fancy term to it.

My father made me realize that I was all about ?buying local? until I had to shell out more money. Granted I do not have a lot of extra cash, which influences my decisionmaking, but I also waste a lot of time trying to get a perceived deal. I spent four hours looking for a cheaper kitchen, time that I could have been working, and billing, for a grant I was supposed to be writing. It wasn?t even my money. Why was I so determined to get the best deal?

For my father, whose hero is Abraham Lincoln, buying the cheap kitchen online was a kind of dishonesty.

Haines & Essick is his store ? the store down the street from his office where people know his name. It?s the store where he has bought Christmas gifts for my brother and me?for 40 years. During my visit home, I was glad to see that it was still there. But I had to admit, if people like me continue to buy everything online or at chain stores, it might not be there in the future. And I know through my work as a grant writer, that it?s the local merchants who sponsor the Little League teams, Meals on Wheels, and other important community programs ? not the big box stores. Local merchants may have to charge more, but they also give back to their communities.

I realize, I can?t always pay more, but I don?t always have to pay less. I like to think I buy local. My dad actually does.

(AP) ? Engineer Dallas Goecker attends meetings, jokes with colleagues and roams the office building just like other employees at his company in Silicon Valley.

But Goecker isn't in California. He's more than 2,300 miles away, working at home in Seymour, Indiana.

It's all made possible by the Beam ? a mobile video-conferencing machine that he can drive around the Palo Alto offices and workshops of Suitable Technologies. The 5-foot-tall device, topped with a large video screen, gives him a physical presence that makes him and his colleagues feel like he's actually there.

"This gives you that casual interaction that you're used to at work," Goecker said, speaking on a Beam. "I'm sitting in my desk area with everybody else. I'm part of their conversations and their socializing."

Suitable Technologies, which makes the Beam, is now one of more than a dozen companies that sell so-called telepresence robots. These remote-controlled machines are equipped with video cameras, speakers, microphones and wheels that allow users to see, hear, talk and "walk" in faraway locations.

More and more employees are working remotely, thanks to computers, smartphones, email, instant messaging and video-conferencing. But those technologies are no substitute for actually being in the office, where casual face-to-face conversations allow for easy collaboration and camaraderie.

Telepresence-robot makers are trying to bridge that gap with wheeled machines ? controlled over wireless Internet connections ? that give remote workers a physical presence in the workplace.

These robotic stand-ins are still a long way from going mainstream, with only a small number of organizations starting to use them. The machines can be expensive, difficult to navigate or even get stuck if they venture into areas with poor Internet connectivity. Stairs can be lethal, and non-techies might find them too strange to use regularly.

"There are still a lot of questions, but I think the potential is really great," said Pamela Hinds, co-director of Stanford University's Center on Work, Technology, & Organization. "I don't think face-to-face is going away, but the question is, how much face-to-face can be replaced by this technology?"

Technology watchers say these machines ? sometimes called remote presence devices ? could be used for many purposes. They could let managers inspect overseas factories, salespeople greet store customers, family members check on elderly relatives or art lovers tour foreign museums.

Some physicians are already seeing patients in remote hospitals with the RP-VITA robot co-developed by Santa-Barbara, Calif.,-based InTouch Health and iRobot, the Bedford, Mass.,-based maker of the Roomba vacuum.

The global market for telepresence robots is projected to reach $13 billion by 2017, said Philip Solis, research director for emerging technologies at ABI Research.

The robots have attracted the attention of Russian venture capitalist Dimitry Grishin, who runs a $25 million fund that invests in early-stage robotics companies.

"It's difficult to predict how big it will be, but I definitely see a lot of opportunity," Grishin said. "Eventually it can be in each home and each office."

His Grishin Robotics fund recently invested $250,000 in a startup called Double Robotics. The Sunnyvale, Calif.,-company started selling a Segway-like device called the Double that holds an Apple iPad, which has a built-in video-conferencing system called FaceTime. The Double can be controlled remotely from an iPad or iPhone.

So far, Double Robotics has sold more than 800 units that cost $1,999 each, said co-founder Mark DeVidts.

The Beam got its start as a side project at Willow Garage, a robotics company in Menlo Park where Goecker worked as an engineer.

A few years ago, he moved back to his native Indiana to raise his family, but he found it difficult to collaborate with engineering colleagues using existing video-conferencing systems.

"I was struggling with really being part of the team," Goecker said. "They were doing all sorts of wonderful things with robotics. It was hard for me to participate."

So Goecker and his colleagues created their own telepresence robot. The result: the Beam and a new company to develop and market it.

At $16,000 each, the Beam isn't cheap. But Suitable Technologies says it was designed with features that make "pilots" and "locals" feel the remote worker is physically in the room: powerful speakers, highly sensitive microphones and robust wireless connectivity.

The company began shipping Beams last month, mostly to tech companies with widely dispersed engineering teams, officials said.

"Being there in person is really complicated ? commuting there, flying there, all the different ways people have to get there. Beam allows you to be there without all that hassle," said CEO Scott Hassan, beaming in from his office at Willow Garage in nearby Menlo Park.

Not surprisingly, Suitable Technologies has fully embraced the Beam as a workplace tool. On any given day, up to half of its 25 employees "beam" into work, with employees on Beams sitting next to their flesh-and-blood colleagues and even joining them for lunch in the cafeteria.

Software engineer Josh Faust beams in daily from Hawaii, where he moved to surf, and plans to spend the winter hitting the slopes in Lake Tahoe. He can't play pingpong or eat the free, catered lunches in Palo Alto, but he otherwise feels like he's part of the team.

"I'm trying to figure out where exactly I want to live. This allows me to do that without any of the instability of trying to find a different job," Faust said, speaking on a Beam from Kaanapali, Hawaii. "It's pretty amazing."

With Washington on Holiday, President Obama Still 'Optimist' on Cliff Deal

WASHINGTON D.C. - Ten days remain before the mandatory spending cuts and tax increases known as the "fiscal cliff" take effect, but President Obama said he is still a "hopeless optimist" that a federal budget deal can be reached before the year-end deadline that economists agree might plunge the country back into recession.

"Even though Democrats and Republicans are arguing about whether those rates should go up for the wealthiest individuals, all of us - every single one of us -agrees that tax rates shouldn't go up for the other 98 percent of Americans, which includes 97 percent of small businesses," he said.

He added that there was "no reason" not to move forward on that aspect, and that it was "within our capacity" to resolve.

The question of whether to raise taxes on incomes over $250,000 remains at an impasse, but is only one element of nuanced legislative wrangling that has left the parties at odds.

For ABC News' breakdown of the rhetoric versus the reality, click here.

At the White House news conference this evening, the president confirmed he had spoken today to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, although no details of the conversations were disclosed.

The talks came the same day Speaker Boehner admitted " God only knows" the solution to the gridlock, and a day after mounting pressure from within his own Republican Party forced him to pull his alternative proposal from a prospective House vote. That proposal, "Plan B," called for extending current tax rates for Americans making up to $1 million a year, a far wealthier threshold than Democrats have advocated.

Boehner acknowledged that even the conservative-leaning "Plan B" did not have the support necessary to pass in the Republican-dominated House, leaving a resolution to the fiscal cliff in doubt.

"In the next few days, I've asked leaders of Congress to work towards a package that prevents a tax hike on middle-class Americans, protects unemployment insurance for 2 million Americans, and lays the groundwork for further work on both growth and deficit reduction," Obama said. "That's an achievable goal. That can get done in 10 days."

Complicating matters: The halls of Congress are silent tonight. The House of Representatives began its holiday recess Thursday and Senate followed this evening.

Meanwhile, the president has his own vacation to contend with. Tonight, he was embarking for Hawaii and what is typically several weeks of Christmas vacation.

However, during the press conference the president said he would see his congressional colleagues "next week" to continue negotiations, leaving uncertain how long Obama plans to remain in the Aloha State.

The president said he hoped the time off would give leaders "some perspective."

"Everybody can cool off; everybody can drink some eggnog, have some Christmas cookies, sing some Christmas carols, enjoy the company of loved ones," he said. "And then I'd ask every member of Congress, while they're back home, to think about that. Think about the obligations we have to the people who sent us here.

"This is not simply a contest between parties in terms of who looks good and who doesn't," he added later. "There are real-world consequences to what we do here."

Obama concluded by reiterating that neither side could walk away with "100 percent" of its demands, and that it negotiations couldn't remain "a contest between parties in terms of who looks good and who doesn't."

Boehner's office reacted quickly to the remarks, continuing recent Republican statements that presidential leadership was at fault for the ongoing gridlock.

"Though the president has failed to offer any solution that passes the test of balance, we remain hopeful he is finally ready to get serious about averting the fiscal cliff," Boehner said. "The House has already acted to stop all of the looming tax hikes and replace the automatic defense cuts. It is time for the Democratic-run Senate to act, and that is what the speaker told the president tonight."

The speaker's office said Boehner "will return to Washington following the holiday, ready to find a solution that can pass both houses of Congress."

DOJ seeks injunction against peanut butter plant

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- The Department of Justice is seeking a permanent injunction against the nation's largest organic peanut butter plant, an eastern New Mexico facility that has been linked to a salmonella outbreak that has sickened 42 people in 20 states this fall.

The request filed Thursday in federal court in Albuquerque seeks to prohibit Sunland Inc. in Portales from receiving, processing, manufacturing or selling any nut products until the Food and Drug Administration is satisfied its operations are safe.

It wasn't immediately clear what prompted federal prosecutors to get involved in the case against Sunland, whose registration to operate was revoked by the FDA last month because of repeated safety violations.

That order came as the company had planned to reopen some its operations after voluntarily recalling hundreds of products and closing its processing and peanut butter plants in late September and early October.

Last week, a Sunland spokeswoman said the company was hoping to get permission from the FDA to reopen its peanut processing plant so it could begin work on the millions of pounds of Valencia peanuts piled up in barns after a bumper harvest this fall.

Officials with the plant and U.S. attorney's office declined to comment on the court filing Friday, but indicated an announcement and possible agreement was in the works.

The FDA's revocation of the company's operation certification marked the first time the FDA used the authority granted under a 2011 food safety law that allows the agency to halt food operations without a court hearing.

The action was denounced as unfair and unnecessarily heavy-handed by many in the conservative farm town of Portales, where Sunland is the largest private employer. At the end of November, the plant had laid off about 30 percent of its 150 workers.

The FDA said inspectors found samples of salmonella in 28 different locations in the plant, in 13 nut butter samples and in one sample of raw peanuts. Inspectors found improper handling of the products, unclean equipment and uncovered trailers of peanuts outside the facility that were exposed to rain and birds. Inspectors also said employees lacked access to hand-washing sinks, and dirty hands had direct contact with ready-to-package peanuts.

The FDA said it inspected the plant at least four times over the past five years, each time finding violations. Michael Taylor, the FDA's deputy commissioner for foods, said the agency's inspections after the outbreak found even worse problems than what had been seen there before.

Plant officials have said they were never notified of past violations.

The salmonella outbreak was traced to Trader Joe's Valencia peanut butter produced at the plant. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 42 people were sickened, mostly children. Sunland is the nation's largest organic peanut butter plant. It produces organic, natural and traditional products for a number of national grocery and retail chains using mostly Valencia peanuts.

Valencias are a variety of peanuts that come almost exclusively from eastern New Mexico. Because of their sweet flavor, they are favored for organic and natural peanut butter products because they require few additives.

Dozens of Mich. schools close amid threats, rumors

(AP) ? Dozens of schools in two Michigan counties have canceled classes for the rest of the week amid rumored threats of violence and problems related to doomsday scenarios based on the Mayan calendar.

Schools in Genesee and Lapeer counties north of Detroit area started the Christmas break Wednesday night rather than hold classes Thursday and Friday. The decision affected thousands of students.

Genesee County school officials say in a statement that the fatal shooting at a Connecticut elementary school last week "changed all of us." Lapeer-area schools Superintendent Matt Wandrie says all the rumors have become a major distraction for students and staff and have disrupted learning.

Friday is the day when some people believe ancient Mayan calendars predict the world would end.

Natural Gas, the Perfect Bridge to Renewable Energy - Part 2

? continued on from part 1.

So what is natural gas?

Natural gas is a mixture of hydrocarbons that varies across the board, depending on where it is found, but its chief component is ?methane?, which usually makes up about 80-95 % of the gas. The rest of the gas consists of varying amounts of other small chain hydrocarbons like ethane, propane, and butane. The chemical formula of Methane is CH4. By weight, methane is 60% carbon. Carbon content is important in terms carbon emissions, which we will discuss shortly.

Gasoline is a complex mixture of over 150 hydrocarbons that may have between 5 to 12 carbon atoms per molecule. Octane with 8 carbon atoms is the principal component of gasoline. Gasoline may also contain chemicals such as corn ethanol, lubricants, anti-rust agents and anti-icing agents that are added to improve vehicle performance. The chemical formula of Octane is C8 H18.? By weight, gasoline is 73% carbon; an increase of 13% over natural gas.

Coal varies widely in its composition containing both combustible organic compounds and inorganic impurities.? It?s composed chiefly of rings of six carbon atoms joined together in a highly complex composition of layered arrangements that has significant amounts of oxygen and nitrogen and trace amounts of sulfur and other environmental pollutants such as mercury, arsenic, cadmium, lead and zinc.? Mercury and sulfur are present in hazardous concentrations. The chemical formula of coal has been approximated as C135 H96 O9 NS. By weight, coal is 81% carbon; an increase of 21% over natural gas.

Natural gas is the cleanest of all the fossil fuels, as evidenced in this chart; coal ? green; Petroleum ? blue; Natural gas ? light blue columns. The level of each primary pollutant is presented as percent difference from coal, where coal is given a relative value of 1. For example, the CO2 level of oil is about 80% that of coal. The CO2 level of natural gas is about 55% that of coal, and so on with the other pollutants.

EIA Natural Gas Issues and Trends
Source: EIA Natural Gas Issues and Trends

Because of their complex make up, when combusted, coal and for the most part oil emit higher levels of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides (NOx), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). Coal also releases ash, particulates and mercury into the environment, substances that do not burn but instead are carried into the atmosphere and contribute to pollution.

The combustion of natural gas, on the other hand, releases very small amounts of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, with virtually no ash, particulate matter or mercury, and lower levels of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and other reactive hydrocarbons.

What Is Renewable Energy

The effort to reduce the world?s dependency on fossil fuels is approached in two different ways ? clean energy and sustainability. Where, clean energy refers to renewable energy technologies and sustainability usually refers to energy conservation achieved through energy efficiency programs.

Looking at clean energy, there is much debate about how to define and distinguish renewable from non-renewable energy, and the terms and definitions chosen can have huge impacts on policy and regulatory efforts aimed at promoting clean energy resources.

The definition of renewable energy seems clear cut: The sun continues to shine, so solar energy is renewable. The wind continues to blow, so wind turbines churn out renewable power. ?But what about a banana ? you can just about grow them forever and when it goes into the garbage and gets burned,? it produces energy and emissions.??? Also, if seemingly clean sources of energy have a long history of use, such as conventional hydropower or dams, why not classify it as renewable. The prevailing thought is by considering existing dams a renewable source of energy it would allow utilities to satisfy any renewable-energy mandates, and therefore, provide little incentives to install new clean energy facilities such as wind, solar or tidal power.

Related Article: Ukraine and Russia Gamble over Europe's Gas Supply

Environmentalists argue that one of the goals of renewable energy is to cut back on the heat-trapping gases emitted from burning organic matter, whether fossil fuels or bananas. Where there is no fire, there are no emissions. A purist would not consider burning bananas a renewable resource.

As a tradeoff, renewable energy can be considered any new energy resource that is naturally replenishable, but flow-limited. That is they generate energy only when the wind is blowing or sun is shining. They are virtually inexhaustible in duration but limited in the amount of energy that is available per unit of time.

Geothermal, biomass and bananas may be stock-limited in that stocks are depleted by use, but on a time scale of decades, or perhaps centuries, they can probably be replenished. Coal and oil can take hundreds of millions of years to form. Of the fossil fuels, only natural gas can be produced anywhere from a few years to hundreds of millions of years.

Furthermore, renewables do not produce toxins or pollutants that are harmful to the environment.
Renewable energy resources are derived:

? directly from the sun, such as?? - thermal,?? - photochemical,?? - photoelectric.
? indirectly from the sun, such as??? ? wind,?? - hydropower,?? -? photosynthetic energy stored in biomass and bananas.
? or from other natural movements and mechanisms of the environment, such as?? ? geothermal,?? -? tidal energy.

What is Sustainability

The trend is clear; the world has to steadily improve its ability to produce more with less energy. Concerns about energy affordability, energy independence, profitability, a clean environment and reduced GHG emissions have heightened interest in the potential for sustainable practices to help address these important issues.

In this sense, renewable energy and sustainability have the same bottom line goals of conserving resources and providing a cleaner environment.? However, they tackle this goal in different ways. In this sense they are separate parallel activities leading to reduced carbon usage.

Sustainability is an approach or even mindset in the sense of an organization and its operation?s simultaneous and balanced concern for:

? People ? in terms of an improvement towards labor, the community and region,
? Planet ? in terms of benefits towards the ecology and the environment, and
? Profits ? in terms of real economic benefits enjoyed by the residential, commercial and industrial sectors.

This combination of people, planet and profits are referred to as the triple bottom line.

The key words in defining sustainability are ?organization? and ?profits.? Rather than the utility base approach of renewable energy, sustainability is the responsibility of an organization and what that organization can do to conserve energy and save money. Their interest is to improve their own balance sheet rather than the balance sheet of other organizations. It?s a matter of internal energy waste management and the programs they implement to reduce their utility bills and operation expenses.

Therefore, the main point of departure between renewable energy and sustainability is how, where and why they are used. Renewable energy is fuel-based and for the most part involves fuel-switching by utilities as a result of policy mandates.

On the other hand, sustainability is organizational-based and for the most part involves implementing energy efficiency programs in the need to reduce expenses. Industries can be more competitive by saving energy and cutting costs and thrive in the global economic landscape.

Overall, society needs both sustainable and renewable resources. Neither precedes or succeeds each other. We can immediately benefit from the implementation of energy efficiency programs while working diligently on a broad spectrum of renewable energy technologies. In this way, we will continuously reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, improve the environment and reap significant financial benefits.

Levelized Cost of Energy

To determine the most economical technology for the type of demand for which new capacity is needed, a model was developed that compares the technologies based on the economics of their Levelized costs. The Levelized cost of electricity or LCOE is a convenient summary measure of the overall competiveness of different generating technologies.

Levelized cost represents, the per kilowatt hour cost of building and operating a generating plant over an assumed financial life and duty cycle. It assumes a 30-year cost recovery period.

Key inputs to calculating LCOE include overnight capital costs, fuel costs, fixed and variable operations and maintenance (O&M) costs, financing costs, and an assumed utilization rate for each type of plant.

The following chart shows the estimated Levelized cost of new electricity generating technologies in the U.S. for a variety of fossil fuel and renewable energy plants.? Each column of the graph is divided into the various financial components of Levelized cost:

Related Article: New York Times has About-Face on Gas

? capital costs are illustrated by the green section of each column
? fixed O&M? -? purple
? variable O&M? including fuel -? light blue, and
? transmission investment? ? dark blue sections.

Alongside each colored column is a gray bar representing the utilization rate for each plant type, which is the ratio of the actual output to its potential output had it operated at full nameplate capacity the entire time. The trend emerges that the lower the utilization rate the higher the LCOE.

U.S. EIA Levelized Cost of New Generation Resources
Source: U.S. EIA Levelized Cost of New Generation Resources

Clearly, the lowest plant costs are natural gas-fired power plants at $80 per MWh. At the other extreme are solar PV power plants at nearly $400 per MWh.

Traditionally natural gas had trouble competing on the variable cost portion but was much more capital-efficient to build. Today, coal-fired plants have skyrocketed in costs due to uncertain future fuel prices and environmental compliance costs.

It?s projected that the spread between coal and natural gas will continue to increase making gas-fired plants more attractive. This has made it very difficult for other energy sources to compete with gas.

The demands on coal-fired plants have made biomass power stations a competitive option. The Levelized costs steadily increase from biomass and geothermal to nuclear and hydro, before skyrocketing to wind and solar power.

Nevertheless, renewable energy, and in particular, bioenergy have great potentials for increased utilization. Bioenergy is the front runner of renewable energy due to its conversion of waste into energy, where waste is generated on all corners of the earth and presents a worldwide problem with its ever increasing buildup and disposal issues. Recycling biomass to generate energy is a highly attractive option.

Without question, the most important barrier to a larger?scale implementation of all of these low carbon technologies comes down to one factor: the cost of the technology, and in particular, the private cost born by the organization implementing the technology.

Technological, regional and policy factors can influence investment decisions including technological and regional characteristics of a project, such as:

? the existing resource mix in a region,
? capacity value, which depends on both the existing capacity mix and load characteristics in a region,
? policy-related factors and incentives for specified resources,
? the uncertainty about future fuel prices and future policies may cause plant owners or investors who finance plants to place a value on portfolio diversification rather than the Levelized cost, and
? penalties and taxes.

The Bridge to the Future

Any projections on the future of the world?s energy production, consumption, and trends are marked with many uncertainties. World economics, politics, environmental concerns, and new technological advances can alter any projection.

Bridge

Like it or not, renewable energy has a long way to go to make an impact on any one country?s energy inventory.

Throughout this discussion, natural gas has emerged time-and-time again as a realistic option to many of the world?s energy problems.? Natural gas, the least disruptive fossil fuel, could serve as a ?bridge? to a low-carbon future.

Every year more and more power is generated by natural gas and less by coal. Fuel-switching power generation to natural gas makes economic and practical sense.

Just about every internal combustion engine could run on natural gas. Natural gas fueled vehicles could make the impact on reducing petroleum consumption that Electric Vehicles (EVs) hoped to achieve.

Natural gas is a step in the right direction.

It?s abundant. Recent advances in technology have unlocked vast supplies of natural gas. This map details the presence of technically recoverable unconventional shale gas resources around the world. These reserves are located in 33 countries and make up 22% of the nearly 850 Tcm of proven and technically recoverable global natural gas supplies.

Natural gas is a more efficient source of electricity compared to coal. It takes 60% more coal to produce one (1) kWh of electricity.

Earlier in this discussion natural gas was shown to be a cleaner source of electricity, compared to coal and oil. It is the cleanest of all fossil fuels.

And finally, countries that have capitalized on their shale gas resources found it to have a profound economic impact on:

? creating jobs,
? reducing consumer cost of natural gas and electricity,
? increasing federal, state and local tax revenue,
? stimulating economic growth, and
? reducing GHG emissions and smog.

Under a scenario, that envisions a worldwide momentum towards stick policies aimed at cutting greenhouse gas emissions; electric utilities and other sectors of the economy will have no other choice but to adopt natural gas as a logical alternative.

Natural gas will buy time to further develop, cleaner fuels. Hopefully on the other side of the bridge there will be a viable renewable energy industry, whether its 50 years or the end of the century. But it?s no here today.

Romania to introduce mandatory health insurance card from 2013

All Romanians over 18 with medical insurance in place will receive a medical insurance card, which will become mandatory from January 1. The card will include basic data about the person: name, unique health insurance number ? different to the personal identification number CNP, as well as medical information.

The card will allow authorities to check whether the person holds medical insurance or not, as well as offer information to specialists about medical data.

Patients will have to give their approval for their medical data to be uploaded on the card: contact person for emergencies, blood group, whether they are organ donors and whether they have chronic diseases.

The electronic health card will be issued and distributed in the first part of 2013, and its cost will be covered by the Health Ministry.

Windows Phone to become no. 2 Mobile OS in India, soon: Vineet Durani, Microsoft India [Interview]

With the launch of Windows Phone 8, Microsoft India aims to become No. 2 mobile operating system in India within 6 months from now. Mr. Vineet Durani, Director- Windows Phone Business Group, Microsoft India has a long conversation with us about the Windows Phone 8. Read the full interview below.

vineet-durani-microsoft

MG: How is Windows Phone OS performing in India ?

?

Vineet Durani: The Windows Phone OS is now about 2 years old and was launched globally in 2010. We entered Indian market with Windows Phone 7.5 version in October 2011 and recently launched the Windows Phone 8. Windows Phone 8 does have a shared core with Windows 8. We have been in India for over an year now and users are getting used to Windows Phone as a platform with more and more people are coming on to it. I am sure you are aware of Nokia?s recently launched Windows Phone 7.5 powered Nokia Lumia 510. It falls in the lower price category which in which smart phones sell in huge numbers in India. We are seeing a huge amount of traction for this device and expect it to be sold in good numbers. We are very excited about the huge portfolio of devices coming through on Windows Phone 8 and affordable devices on Windows Phone 7.5.
?

While we don?t share sales numbers, but ITC releases figures in every quarter and the latest study puts us at 4.1% market share in July-September (2012) quarter which is higher than that of BlackBerry?s and iOS? share in India. We are number 3 at the moment as far as Q3 is concerned. We are very excited to see the progress since last one year. We hope that in next 3-6 months, Windows Phone OS will be at a solid number 2 position.

MG:?There are many early adopter of Windows Phone OS who are right now on version 7.5, when can we expect Windows Phone 7.8 upgrade?

?

Vineet Durani:?Microsoft will make an update available for Windows Phone 7.5 named Windows Phone 7.8. This update will include the new Windows Phone 8 Start Screen and will be made available in the coming days. [Editor's Note: This interview was taken a few days back. Yesterday we published a story on availablity of Windows Phone 7.8 for certain Nokia Lumia smartphones.]
?

MG:?What is Microsoft India doing to increase the popularity of Windows Phone OS in India?
?

Vineet Durani:?The feedback we have got from the users is tremendous. People have loved the Windows Phone OS ? the refreshing new UI, the fluidity, exceptional features, etc. We also constantly keep on taking the feedback from the market in terms of the features that are relevant to a particular segment and a lot of it has been used for Windows Phone 8. Every ecosystem has its own way of approaching how to bring the relevant experience to the market. We at Microsoft are investing heavily in showing the Windows Phone experience via experiential demos at all consumer touch points like Colleges, Youth Hangouts like Cafes, Malls & Retail Stores. Additionally, all our OEM partners like Nokia & HTC are investing in marketing campaigns across TV, Print, Retail & Digital.
?

We certainly believe that highly optimized operating system for the hardware and very deep synergy between the hardware and software is very important for user experience across price points.

MG: One of the challenges before Microsoft is the lesser number of apps available on Windows Phone. How is Microsoft dealing with it?

Vineet Durani:

  • Windows Phone has a robust store with 125,000 apps. These apps deliver the highest quality experience to the consumer. All important apps which are most used by smart phone users are available.
  • Our ecosystem is growing rapidly with a majority of big players in the industry.
  • We?re seeing thousands of Indian developers actively building apps for Windows Phone. With the industry-leading revenue terms offered by the Windows Store, we expect we?ll see even more great apps make their way to the Windows Store ? and a new generation of developers.
Any ecosystem takes a while for people wanting to write applications, if you look at the genesis of any other ecosystem, Windows Phone has reached this destination faster than any other ecosystem. And now because of ecosystem shifts, Angry Birds and Star Wars went live on Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, iOS and Android at the same time across the world. ?

MG: What is Microsoft doing to bring in more developers to the platform?

Vineet Durani:?We have a large number of programs that we run for developers to enable them to get skilled and trained for developing the apps on our platform. There is also a Windows Phone 8 SDK available for Unity which is usually the most prevalent platform to build games. The other thing which we do is that we help local developers to market their apps on our Windows Phone Store, so when you access that Windows Phone store you will see a bunch of apps that are featured apps or apps which are merchandized in the spotlight for any particular day. This entire merchandising is done by Microsoft for each market and is localized for each market.

MG: Currently you have a very few OEM partners. Can we see a better number in coming months?

Vineet Durani:?The way to look at this is that do we have large enough product portfolio available across price segments. Our partners Nokia, HTC and Samsung have an array of devices that are available across the price segment from below Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 40000 approx. We do work with some of the other OEM partners who are not present in India but in other countries. Our constant endeavour is to look for partners who offer us best hardware for the operating system so as to deliver a great experience for the consumer.?
