(AP) ? The German teen was beaten, forced to sleep and eat with pigs, and whipped while pulling a horse cart, the villagers said. But every time Bosnian police responded to the neighbors' calls about her, they simply couldn't track her down.

It took years ? her house was isolated, and the teen was usually out of sight ? but finally, Sead Makalic managed to snap a photo of the teen using his mobile phone and convince police that she was not a mythical creature.

This helped lead to her rescue earlier this month in Karavlasi village, the detention of her stepfather and one of his female partners ? and tearful denials from the 19-year-old's mother, who insisted her daughter was mentally disabled and had never been mistreated.

The case has riveted and outraged this nation of 3.5 million, especially the neighbors, who had long kept trying to help someone the police weren't sure was real.

"I could not watch any more what they were doing to her, how they were beating her," said Makalic, as he recounted his part in the case to The Associated Press.

He and other villagers said in interviews on Monday that the young woman was treated like a slave. Several villagers claimed the stepfather, 52-year-old Milenko Marinkovic, on at least one occasion forced the teen to pull a cart while whipping her like a horse, and that they also saw her eating raw pumpkin and pig feed.

Makalic, a big, burly farmer, who used a curse word in every sentence and offered a reporter plum brandy early Monday morning, was visibly agitated as he described the situation. He alleged that the woman arrested in the case, 45-year-old Slavojka Marinkovic, once hit the teen with a sickle, wounding her back and causing her to cry.

When he protested that, it seemed no one in the house really cared, said Makalic, who hails from the neighboring village of Gojcin. "They'd put something on the wound and behaved as if nothing happened," he said.

Makalic was the only villager who allowed his name to be used ? the others fear reprisals from relatives of the detained couple.

The teen was known as Bedina, but villagers don't believe that was her real name and assumed it came from the German word Bediener, which means servant and is pronounced the same way. The teen had no documents and authorities are trying to establish what her real name was, said a police official who spoke on condition of anonymity due to agency rules.

The spokesman for the prosecutor's office, Admir Arnautovic, said the 19-year-old is recovering in a safe house after police found her on May 17th "disorientated and with visible injuries." Milenko Marinkovic and his partner Slavojka Marinkovic are in custody and face potential charges of illegal imprisonment and cruelty.

The young woman's German mother, Kristina Siegner, 54, was living with the couple as Milenko's legal wife. Siegner often goes to work in Austria for months at a time, and had arrived back home after a three-month work stint the night before the police probe that finally found her daughter. She has been questioned by police but not been detained.

Siegner insisted to the AP on Monday that her daughter ? whom she referred to as Bedina ? was happy and called the villagers' claims "all lies."

"Everybody here was good to her, my husband was good to her, (Slavojka) was good to her, she was happy here," Siegner said. She added that her husband treated the teen like his own daughter, bought her a horse because she loved animals, and that the teen spent her days playing and taking long walks in the woods.

Siegner said she had nine children in Germany but came to Bosnia in 2004 with three of her daughters to run away from her former husband. She married Milenko Marinkovic in 2006 and moved into the house with him and his romantic partner Slavojka, who had agreed that he could take in a wife.

Siegner said her daughter was mentally disabled and that that was why she was not attending school. The mother said she did not know there were special schools for such children in Bosnia.

"We were happy, we got along well, shared chores around the house," Siegner said, sobbing. "Now I'm alone here. My husband is gone, my daughter is gone. I miss her so."

The mother denied villagers' claims that her daughter had ever slept with the pigs. At one point she showed the AP a room in the house where she said she slept with her daughter on a queen-sized bed. Inside the bedroom's closet hung men's suits and shirts along with women's dresses.

The police official said his agency responded to calls about the teen numerous times ? the first call was at least five years ago, according to villagers ? but never found her, even when they staged a full-on raid. It was possible the family hid the teen in the woods.

Eventually, Makalic said that police told him a photo of the teen would help the case.

After getting the photo, the police again went to the Marinkovic house, the police official said. The teen wasn't there, but this time the police wouldn't stop pressing her stepfather. Finally, he went outside and brought her in, the official said. The teen looked like she was 40 years old, was wearing three or four sweaters, and was soaking wet.

Small business advertising, Marketing, Facebook Fan Pages ...

Small Business Online Marketing and Advertising

Until recently, online advertising and advertising was a thing that the big companies did. Local small business didn?t see a need for internet advertising, but the times have changed. But now searches for local businesses or Local firms have replaced the white and the yellow pages. Quite simply put, if your local firm cannot be found online, you will not grow, and there is a good chance that you will not survive.

The intent of this article is to present some of the alternatives on hand to Local Corporation and small businesses for promotion or campaigning online on the internet. This article will address sections on; video infomercials, classified ad posting, setting up a Google Places account, producing a website and optimizing it for page one result on a SERP, and harnessing the power of the Social Networks.

List and Back page Postings

Free and paid classified ads posting can be very lucrative if done right or a total waste of time and money if not accomplished in a marketing friendly way. The two most popular free classified ad sites are Craig?s List and Back page. Both of these sites will allow text and graphic advertisings. Unluckily most people who own local small businesses do not comprehend the html web language essential to fabricate image ads, so the majority of the advertisings are monotonous black and white text ads. What is more important concerning these ads is that often the search engines unearth them and bring them to page one for precise product or service searches. Instead of carefully reading these text ads the potentially paying customer says to heck with it and goes to the next SERP result devoid of ever finding out what you were advertising; a tragedy! If the text does get their attention, there is often no link to a website or expedient and direct process of achieving more information. This means that these ads are not likely to convert into sales. Those possible prospects at once leave without even finding out what was there. There is no doubt that these free classified ad internet sites generate very good traffic. It is crucial that the small business or the local business owner learn how to write these ads so that they grab the reader?s attention, and which have a strong call to action to cause the reader to convert.

The Power of Video

Did you know that YouTube is a very dominant advertising venue? Video watching is a passion for many. Marketing by video can be a very fruitful means of driving traffic to your small business. Even if YouTube is the largest and most popular video site, it is by far not the only video posting site, there are scores of them; and video can be hosted on your own sit or any other hosting site. Video posting sites are powerful, as you can construct a video infomercial in minutes and straight away have it distributing your special message 24/7. The dominant video tools and posting options today equal or exceed the power of high impact television advertisings. It is even better if you can use a technique of faux List or Back page clickable ads to bring the reader off of your colorful Advertisement to a web page that plays your video totally independent of YouTube. Bringing readers to your site rather than YouTube or some other video site is preferable because the competing local businesses are now absent, and you have complete control of 100% of the content on the webpage. These handsome, eye catching, converting clickable ads can be obtained from professions for about $500, and they can be used over and over again on multiple sites. Don?t have a site to host the video, don?t worry these same professionals are able and happy to host the video and your other marketing material for about $25 per month.

If your Business is not on Page one of a SERP you loose

This is one of the most powerful tools available to local business proprietors, but not the only one by far. This process involves the selection and securing of a marketable URL or domain, developing a page or mini site and optimizing it to be found for specific search terms on the internet. If this is done properly, every time a person searches for your merchandise or service, your business appears on the first page of Google as an ?Organic Ad? and when people click on that search ad they land on your website. Please be reminded, that you can optimize your internet site for a few as one keyword string. Lots of local firms start the SERP optimization process, SEO, with one or two keywords and finance more keyword phrases as they can from the resulting increased cash flow.

Google Places is Powerful

Perhaps the first thing that a Local Business proprietor should do is to set up their Google places account. Google Places is the new name for Google Maps. Google has strict rules on how to set up your Google Places account and how to optimize it, so you are well advised to seek out a professional to help you with this significant task. In certain cases, these Google Places listings actually drive the Organic listings to page two. When your Google places comes up on page one it is a direct line to your local business, including your business name photos of your choice, your business phone number, the street address, website, email address, store or office hours, video infomercials, product descriptions, and much more.

Social Networking Yields Local Business Revenue

SEO today, Social Media tomorrow! Savvy businesses advertise their Face book and Twitter links to attract more loyal customers. Social media is the new WEB 2.0, and it is going to overtake all other advertising venues on the internet. Small business and local business owners who know how to set up and maintain a dynamic Face book profile can benefit from exponential growth. Social media marketing is extremely important and very powerful small business and Local business marketing venues, so much so that they require a dedicated article. Stay tuned!

Broadband Phones or VoIP Phones Over Traditional New Phone ...

Broadband phones, also known as "VoIP is catching on faster than ever. And no wonder, since the monthly cost of broadband telephone services, including long distance, are less expensive than what you pay for your phone company is just a dial tone. Yes, of course, you need a high-speed Internet connection that you connect your broadband phone, but most of the houses, in any case, so this is just another service that takes the minimum amount at a rate far, and only use it when you have active conversation on the phone.

Yes, broadband phone service is very popular. In fact, about a year ago new phone activation number of the U.S., which were broadband phones or VoIP phones over traditional phone services, new, for the first time in history! Yes, there are advantages as well as some neat features offered by some (not all) of the broadband supplier.

But there are also some disadvantages, so let's take a brief look at the two corners.

Benefits

As stated earlier, broadband phone service is much cheaper than traditional phone service. Most broadband phone service includes unlimited "long distance calling in the continental United States, as well as locally. With a traditional phone, or pay a high premium for the unlimited option, or even discount long distance plan, you are still paying about 2.5 to 3 cents per minute (or more) long-distance calls.

There are many vendors and companies offering residential broadband phone service, it seems everyone wants to get. But what I noticed most expensive place to get it is from your cable company! Yes, the cable company, the same as that which provides you with cable TV, and perhaps also a cable Internet service provider, typically offer broadband phone service is almost twice what you can get it elsewhere. It pays to have knowledge of shopper!

Yes, almost everyone has heard of Vonage, and this service can be purchased at places like Best Buy, Circuit City, even Walmart. But again, you'll pay about 20% more than you need if you knew what I could be there.

Long distance, where the broadband phone plan for unlimited calling in Canada in the field, but some also in Puerto Rico. Some like Packet8 have separate plans to allow Europe to call and / or Asia. Know where you want to call and see if it is included in an air carrier's plan.

The word "unlimited" part - it is not really unlimited, at least not in the unlimited, so I know my Funk & Wagnall definition. Most carriers allow about 3,000 to 4,000 minutes a month, then they can call you and ask about the excessive use may think you are a business (higher rates) or by using some kind of auto-dialer strict no-no).

Disadvantages

Keep in mind that broadband phone service, you can make and receive calls via your own high-speed Internet connection. You need to have a good relationship, rather than the fringe areas of DSL. And if you can get satellite internet, and then hang him, because VOIP satellite is not going to be pretty at all.

Since you are using an Internet connection, it should be noted that, if your Internet connection goes down, your broadband phone. It is true that if you need phone service, and your Internet connection is not reliable, you may want to think about VOIP phone service.

Bigfoot Hair Samples Wanted At Oxford University

By: Rob Adams
05/24/2012 10:41 AM ET

Oxford University wants Bigfoot DNA, such as hair samples, in an effort to crack the mystery. They want to find out if Bigfoot (or the Yeti) actually exists as a species, and they are determined to do it through genetics.

Bigfoot Hair Samples

In a project announced this week, Oxford University and Lausanne Museum of Zoology scientists appealed to museums, scientists and yeti aficionados to share samples thought to be from the mythical ape-like creature. Researchers plan to focus on hair to determine the species it originated from.

Bryan Sykes of Oxford University said the group had already received samples to test, including blood, hair, and items supposedly chewed by Bigfoot.

Sykes acknowledged that the chances of proving a new yeti species? existence was low, but ?if we don?t look, we?ll never find out.?

Other experts agreed recent advances made in DNA testing could theoretically solve the Bigfoot question.

?If the Yeti is real and somebody has found bits of their hair, you should be able to tell from the DNA in the hair if this is actually a Yeti,? said Mark Thomas, a professor of evolutionary genetics at University College London. He is not connected to the Bigfoot project.

New genetic tests will be done on just a few strands of hair and should be completed within weeks. Even if the sample is judged to come from an unknown species, scientists should be able to tell how closely it is related to other species, including apes or humans.

In fact, there is already evidence of interbreeding between homo sapiens and Neanderthals.

Asia stocks inch higher on Greek vote hopes

(AP) ? Asian stock markets nudged higher Monday after opinion polls in Greece suggested the country might stick with austerity and stay in the euro common currency.

The likelihood of Greece leaving the euro has been growing steadily since early May, when political parties opposed to the harsh terms of the country's financial rescue received unexpectedly high support.

But surveys over the weekend showed that Greeks, while angry after more than two years of austerity measures that have seen salaries and pensions cut and new taxes imposed, still want Greece to keep the euro currency and not revert back to the drachma.

The May election results were so splintered that it left the country without a coalition government. Another election has been set for June 17.

Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney, said it made sense for investors to remain subdued this far ahead of the election.

"The response has so far been very muted because these things could easily wax and wane over the course of the next two weeks," said Spooner. "One of the key drivers for investors will be trying to assess what the outcome of Greek election may be."

Japan's Nikkei 225 index swung between gains and losses before settling marginally higher at 8,586.22.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.3 percent to 18,767.30. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.8 percent to 4,059.90 as traders scooped up bargains among resource and banking shares that were sold off recently.

South Korean markets were closed for a public holiday. Wall Street will be closed Monday for Memorial Day, which typically results in subdued stock trading globally.

Later in the week, the U.S. government will release employment data for May, while China will release monthly manufacturing data. A private survey last week showed activity weakened further in May.

Even good results might not be enough to embolden investors spooked at the possibility that austerity-weary Greece could refuse to take steps necessary to get the next installment of a loan to prevent bankruptcy. That could lead to a massive debt default, Greece's exit from the euro and financial chaos.

"The situation in Greece as it currently stands probably skews risk to the downside," CMC's Spooner said. "It's difficult to be too aggressive with the Greece situation looming. Greece does sort of override all of this."

Debt-mired Greece has been kept solvent since May 2010 through loans from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

A first bailout package of 110 billion euros ($138 billion) was agreed in May 2010 and a second, 130 billion euros deal was approved in March 2012.

A separate deal with private creditors earlier this year allowed Greece to write off nearly 107 billion euros of its 368 billion euro debt.

Among individual stocks, Japan's Renesas Electronics Corp. plunged 10.6 percent after weekend reports said the struggling semiconductor maker could trim up 30 percent of its workforce. But electronics giant Sharp Corp. added 5.9 percent and game maker Nintendo Co. rose 3.2 percent.

Benchmark oil for July delivery was up 74 cents to $91.60 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 20 cents to settle at $90.86 in New York on Friday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2593 from $1.2518 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 79.42 yen from 79.66 yen.

No Memorial Day Parade, Ceremony Planned

For several years, a Memorial Day Parade marched down Main Street in Stroudsburg.

However, this year there will be no parade because the organizer got sick.

Now, a veterans group is organizing a memorial service to make sure none of our military heroes is forgotten.

?We need to represent our veterans. We can?t let them go without being remembered. We couldn?t do a parade this year because our new organization formed last fall and we don?t have the means or the backing yet to put on a parade,? said Lehy Kirchner, the vice chairman of the Monroe County Veterans Association.

The Monroe County Veterans Association is planning a ceremony for 1:00 Sunday in front of the Monroe County Courthouse.

The ceremony is near and dear to their hearts, as each of them has served our country.

They proudly showed Newswatch 16 pictures of when they were serving overseas, some in Vietnam.

?We honor those who have fallen and that?s what it?s about, to honor our war dead and their service to our county,? said Glen Lippincott, the chairman of the Monroe County Veterans Association.

?We?re going to have guest speakers, patriotic music, we?re going to have a glee club,? said Kirchner.

?Everybody thinks it a good time for a barbecue or picnic. That?s a good thing. But you need to stop and remember the entitlements we?re so used to taking for granted, somebody had to pay for that. A lot of them paid for that with their lives,? said Lippincott.

The Monroe County Veterans Association is hosting a ceremony on Sunday at 1 p.m. in front of the Monroe County Courthouse, at Courthouse Square.
