Humanity's Quest to Learn about Our Origins and Last Call for the Science in Action Award

Humans have a seemingly primal need to understand how we came to be the way we are today. Pieces of our ancient forebears generally are hard to come by, however. Scientists working to interpret our evolution often have had to make do with studying a fossil toe bone here or a jaw there. Now, in an amazing bounty, paleoanthropologist Lee Berger and his team have uncovered two well-preserved partial skeletons of Australopithecus sediba that date from nearly two million years ago at a site near Johannes?burg, South ?Africa; the specimens include bones from every region of the body. The bones of at least four other individuals have also been found.

Already those first two A. sediba skel?etons suggest we may have to revise a lot of what we thought was true about early human history. If Berger?s interpretation of the bones is correct, some branches of our family tree may need to be redrawn. Senior editor Kate Wong visited the site with Berger to learn more. This month?s cover story, ?First of Our Kind.?

Turning to the state of our species today, we offer a special report on polio. Worldwide confirmed cases of the disease, which once crippled hundreds of thousands, have dropped into the hundreds. But eliminating it remains challenging. Medical reporter Helen Brans?well explains why in ?Polio?s Last Act.? As you?ll learn in journalist William Swanson?s ?Birth of a Cold War Vaccine,? in the 1950s polio terrified the U.S. and U.S.S.R. almost as much as nuclear weapons. To test the oral vaccine, two scientists bridg?ed their countries? differences. They have saved uncounted thousands from the misery of this ancient scourge.

Last Call
Students ages 13 to 18, you still have time to enter the Google Science Fair: April 1 is the deadline. All entries are automatically considered for Scientific American?s Science in Action award. In add?ition to the $50,000 prize, the winner will get a year of mentoring.

Science in Action is a new addition to the Google Science Fair for 2012. The winning project will be able to address a social, environmental or health issue to make a practical difference in the lives of a group or community and may possibly be scaled. To get inspired, watch a video about a Science in Action?style 2011 finalist, Harine Ravichandran, at www.Scientific?American.com/science-in-action. On that page, you can also find a list of our judges and mentors.

The Science in Action winner will be announced in June and will join Google Science Fair finalists at the company?s Mountain View, Calif., campus for a special awards event on Monday, July 23. I?m a judge again this year. Best of luck to all entrants.

Science Fiction // Rock Band?

Yes, I have seen those movies. That's exactly the problem. I have seen them, but what else is there to see? Every year brings new science fiction movies in which the great potential that is explored in those movies (I wouldn't agree about Star Trek movies, though) is wasted.

Here are a few examples of major science fiction productions of 2011:
Battle: Los Angeles, Super 8, X-Men First Class, Green Lantern, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Cowboys and Aliens, Real Steel, The Thing
Was any of those movies anything more than good entertainment at best? There's the exception of Another Earth, but this movie really felt like nothing more than a wannabe indie movie to me. A great cinematography, but not much flesh around the bones. An aesthetic that is irrelevant to the content.

The problem with science fiction is that it's risky. It costs a lot to produce because it often depends heavily on special effects. Don't get me wrong, some producers will take some risks. Melancholia, if you consider it science fiction, is certainly a very uncommon movie (although I wouldn't exactly consider Lars Von Trier a risk). In 2009, the movie Moon was quite a remarkably unconventional production considering how heavily it depended on CGI.

But once again, that's my point: it's remarkable to see productors take so much risks.

Locating Small Business Security Online | welcome to dialup911.com

With all of the other associated costs of running a business the subject of security is one that is often overlooked, forgotton or is put on the back burner. It can often be a negative event that can lead to a business owner to taking the matter seriously where, as in reality, we should be proactive rather than reactive. In this article I will be writing about the way in which my small business has been able to obtain a very good deal to protect my company ? a deal which has enabled me to have a renewed peace of mind.

Like many other business owners I have found the last couple of years to be some what of a struggle ? the recession has hit my company as it has the majority of other sectors in England. I do however like to think of myself as quite an astute businessman ? I have after all lived through previous recessions and I have emerged from them fairly unscathed. I always think long term and I am very much aware that in business you tend to have these peaks and troughs.

I have however made and implemented certain cost cutting measures however when it comes to the key holding service this was one area which I left very much in tact.

When attempting to source a suitable security company, that can provide services such as security guards, I did my usual thing of scouring every available avenue. I also spoke with the majority of my close business associates in the hope that they could recommend such a service/company etc. This did provide me with a few lines of enquiry to follow up however in the end I managed to obtain the best deal elsewhere.

So where did you obtain the best deal for the security company I can hear you all ask? Well as I am sure many of the readers of this article have found the internet is just amazing when it comes to finding bargains. After spending a couple of days searching online and speaking with a number of companies I managed to secure a very fair deal. I can now sleep very easy at night!

Looks great, please save me the Joker.

I was born to fight for those I love
To see them safe and happy
To protect them from harm
And to keep the darkness at bay
To slay those who harm mine
And to shield them from the darkness that hides inside me.
For I fear no man
Yet I shun my own reflection
For I have become the grim reaper of eternal love
A destroyer of worldly dreams
The creator of all consuming darkness
I fear no man
And feed on those who fail to fear me..

Woot! The advantages of recycling a character!

Can't wait to see Nashi's future victims FRIENDS! Ehehehehe~ >.> But seriously, I'm SUPER excited!

I was really excited for Nashi's original RP, but that died... TTmTT

IT WON'T HAPPEN TO THIS ONE.

*coughs*

Anyways, heads up everybody I'm also going to use Nashi's old first post for this one. I looked at it, and it's pretty long....

If there are any characters left, I will gladly play them. Just not the king. As Nashi's rival, I will not help but make the poor guy look stupid.

And not the Joker either, if Shadow doesn't submit for some reason.

BTW Broken, your icon hypnotizes me... @.@

UK to extend Sunday shopping hours for Olympics

(AP) ? Britain's Treasury chief says he is planning to loosen restrictions on Sunday trading during this summer's London Olympics.

By law, large stores in England and Wales can only open for six hours on Sundays, but Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne says restrictions will be lifted during the Olympic and Paralympic games.

He said Sunday that with hundreds of thousands of people visiting Britain for the sports extravaganza, "it would be a great shame ... if the country had a 'closed for business' sign on it."

Opposition Labour Party treasury spokesman Ed Balls says he wouldn't want to see the change become permanent.

The 2012 London Olympics run July 27-Aug. 12 and the Paralympics Aug. 29-Sept. 9.
