Italian immigrant life informs art | Local | Entertainment | The London ...

The Italian-Canadian experience and its place in the arts takes centre stage at King?s University College on Wednesday night.

Toronto-area poet Gianna Patriarca and filmmakers Adrianna Monti, of the Toronto area, and London?s Mario Circelli share the program devoted to experiences of immigration and Italian-Canadian life.

Born in Ceprano, Frosinone, Italy, Patriarca came to Canada in 1960. She studied at York and published her first book of poems, Italian Women and Other Tragedies in 1994.

Circelli?s documentary projects include In Our Own Words, which chronicles the stories of Italians in London.

He also is a music scene activist who is helping launch a new project, the Ontario Independent Music Archive (OIMA) this weekend. It is being launched on Saturday at a show starring TreeTop and featuring Casper, Olenka and the Autumn Lovers, NFG and the Windsor?s Learning a.k.a. Learning, The Band.

OIMA is where musicians can post and share their work with the public and where fans can discover and dust off independent music. That project is funded by a two-year, $224,500 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

Monti?s projects are often collaborative and she has been part of Toronto?s Nuite Blanche.

Patriarca is among the subjects in Monti?s Three Women, Adapting Lives, Adopting Lines.

Patriarca reflects on her own experience coming to Canada and first working as a schoolteacher and later as a writer.

?The idea was to render homage and give voice to Italian-Canadian women because their stories are all too often relegated to second place,? Monti told corrieretandem.com.

?I chose three generations that could demonstrate the manner of reacting at various historic moments of Canada: the enthusiasm of those who immigrated before the war, the difficulties of the Post War when Toronto began to be an immigration destination and racism began to manifest, and the end of last century, which saw new migratory flows.?
